Open Thou Mine Eyes is a visual meditation on the prayer of Psalm 119:18: “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
The painting draws upon the imagery of the veil—the boundary between mortal experience and the presence of God. The figure on the right stands before the veil, speaking four key words as he approaches. These sacred words are intentionally left unspoken in the painting, representing temple truths that are not meant to be uttered outside their sacred setting. As the words are spoken, the veil opens and he is admitted into the presence of the Lord, represented by the figure on the left.
The divided composition reflects the movement from separation to communion, while the architectural forms and symbolic elements draw upon ancient temple imagery. The gold leaf catches the light across the painting, emphasizing the sacred threshold and suggesting the light that lies beyond the veil.
Each print is a fine-art Giclée reproduction on Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, individually hand-gilded with metal leaf by the artist. Because each print is finished by hand, every one has subtle variations and is uniquely its own.
