Re-Reading, Re-Making: Art After Dialogue
The Second Exhibition at the J. Kirk Richards Museum of Art
I’m honored to have my work included in Re-Reading, Re-Making: Art After Dialogue, an exhibition celebrating 60 years of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought.
This exhibition is particularly meaningful because it marks the second exhibition ever held at the J. Kirk Richards Museum of Art in Provo, Utah. The museum’s inaugural exhibition was a solo exhibition of work by J. Kirk Richards, making this show an exciting next chapter for the new museum.
I’m also especially honored that my painting, I Will Show You All These, was selected as the official poster artwork for the exhibition.
The painting grew directly out of the history the exhibition is celebrating. I Will Show You All These reimagines Joseph Smith within the visual world of the Egyptian facsimiles in the Book of Abraham, drawing particularly from Figure 7 of Facsimile 2 and Hugh Nibley’s 1968 Dialogue essay.
In the painting, Joseph sits within an Egyptian temple-like setting surrounded by imagery drawn from the facsimiles: the wedjat eye, offering table, scrolls, and other Egyptian symbols. The scene explores the intersection of revelation, translation, scholarship, and the way sacred texts continue to be read and re-read across generations.
The title comes from Abraham 3:12:
“And it came to pass that the Lord said unto me: These are the governing ones; and the name of that great one is Kolob, because it is near unto me. … I will show you all these.”
For me, the exhibition is an opportunity to participate in that ongoing process of reading, questioning, interpreting, and making—not simply looking backward at six decades of conversation, but allowing those ideas to inspire something new.
I’m grateful that I Will Show You All These can serve as the visual introduction to this exhibition and that my work will be part of this important moment in the museum’s early history.
